Lymph Drainage Therapy
The Lymphatic System
The lymphatic system is a fluid system of the body that transports numerous substances (i.e. proteins, toxins, hormones, fatty acids, and immune cells) to lymph nodes where the lymph is filtered, purified, and concentrated. Once purified, it is then returned to the circulatory system.
The proper functioning of the lymphatic system is critical to our body's ability to drain stagnant fluids, detoxify, regenerate tissues, filter out toxins and foreign substances, and maintain a healthy immune system.
Swelling (edemas), chronic inflammation, surgery, trauma, burns, lack of physical activity, stress, fatigue, emotional shock, age, and restrictive clothing, can all contribute to stagnation, or slowing, of the circulation of lymph, thereby allowing toxins and proteins to accumulate in the tissues. This may open the way to many physical ailments and hasten the aging process.
Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT)
Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) is a gentle, light-touch, noninvasive technique that aids in the recirculation of this amazing lymph fluid.
The origins of Lymph Drainage can be traced to the published research of Frederic Millard, a Canadian Osteopath (1922) and Emil Vodder, a Danish massage practitioner and doctor of philosophy (1932). Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) was developed by the French lymphologist, Dr. Bruno Chikly. Created out of his award-winning research on the lymphatic system, LDT takes traditional lymph drainage techniques and adds a new level of precision in keeping with the latest scientific discoveries and exact anatomical science.
A skilled LDT practitioner can attune to the precise rhythm, direction, depth, and quality of the lymph flow, and improve the overall efficiency of the lymphatic system. For the client, the process is very pleasurable and induces deep states of relaxation.
The Benefits of Lymph Drainage Therapy
In essence, Lymph Drainage Therapy assists in the recirculation of body fluids, stimulates the immune system, and promotes a state of relaxation in the autonomic nervous system. It is shown that when these actions are accomplished, the results may be:
• Reduction in edemas (swelling) and lymphedemas of many origins
• Detoxification of the body
• Regeneration of tissues (e.g., from burns and pre- and post-surgical scarring) and anti-aging effects
• Relief of chronic and subacute inflammation and conditions such as acne, eczema and allergies
• Immune system stimulation for preventive and therapeutic effects
• Reduction in the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia
• Relief of chronic pain
• Deep relaxation to aid insomnia, depression, stress, loss of vitality, and loss of memory
• Antispastic actions to relieve conditions such as voluntary or involuntary muscle hypertonus
• Alleviation of adiposis and cellulite tissue
